Why Employee Well-Being Becoming Part of Mission

Exercising goes beyond losing weight or reducing measures, it brings innumerable benefits, like a boost in productivity at work. That’s why more companies are finding ways to include engagement for health and wellness into their employee benefits. The main objectives of exercise pursued by most people are usually to improve general health, lose weight, and gain muscle mass, but there are so many more benefits. Studies have shown that constant physical activity can not only improve your quality of life, but can make you happier, and increase your work productivity. Improving Mental Well-being We’re faced with so many stress factors every day that often generate psychological imbalances, but working out releases endorphins, hormones capable of creating a sense of relaxation and happiness. Doctors point out that physical exercise is also able to relieve certain symptoms of depression. In some cases, it has been speculated that exercise can be as effective as antidepressant medication. This is why many psychologists recommend people suffering from anxiety start practicing some form of physical activity. It also diminishes the risk of any cognitive degeneration. Aging as well as degenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s cause the death of brain cells, which in the long run leads to the loss of many important functions of the brain. And although exercise and a healthy diet are not able to cure this neuro-degenerative disease, they are capable of preventing its appearance by decreasing the cognitive deterioration that begins after 45 years of age. The Results of Occupational Health And Wellness At-A-Glance Improves Alertness. When you exercise you increase the flow of blood to your brain, which makes you more alert and more prepared to face obstacles and problems, increasing your ease to solve them. You’ll Have More Energy and Endurance. A body in movement has more energy to develop its day-to-day tasks. People mistakenly believe you will feel more tired; on the contrary, you will feel more awake in the office. A Boost in Physical Health. In addition to reducing weight, you will feel more conditioned because you regulate your blood pressure and increase your stamina to support more physical activity that your work requires. Increasing Intellectual Capacity Several studies conducted in mice, and some also in men, have shown that cardiovascular exercise can create new brain cells (neurogenesis) and improve the overall performance of the brain. Other studies suggest that a hard workout increases the levels of a protein known as BDNF (Brain Derived Neurotrophic Factor) which is thought to be able to help in decision making, thinking and learning. Even better, research shows that workers who use part of a half-day break to exercise are more productive and have more energy than their more sedentary peers. A healthy company is a competitive company. People who are healthy are more enthusiastic about getting up every morning and going to work. What happens if organizational well-being is lacking? Experts say production goes down, internal conflicts increase, and tension ensues, which often results in stress, anxiety and absenteeism. So, a company’s goal nowadays should include the mission to maintain the physical, psychological and social health of workers because there’s a bigger payoff in the end.
